April 8, 2008 Fly Tyers Dungeon was started in 1999 as a fun and part time fly tying material business. Here at FTD we produce our own line of tying materials not buying from the same 5 or 6 suppliers that supply most shops. Since I was a little Mad Scientist, I always played around with various materials to incorporate them into my flies and slowly began developing products and producing tying materials from scratch.I have been in the fly fishing business for over 35 years and have a love of fly tying and the materials that go into flies and it continues to this day. I could list the many products we have produced, but who really cares...not me. Over the years, the fly fishing business seemed to stray from the reason people fly fish and why people got into the business. Prices were pushed to the limit, egos erupted and extreme commercialization paved the way. Wrong, not really, but not for me nor why I do what I do. I began Fly Tyers Dungeon to give people a choice of where to purchase materials (unique and our own) at reasonable prices, prices that reflect 20 to 30 years ago. I could handle other companies products, sell the same materials that everyone sells at basically the same price, but that's not Igor or myself. It's not in our blood. Over the years, I have dealt with many fly fishing companies, many are true to the nature of fly fishing and others are a pain in the carpathian a@@. This for me is FUN, being able to have and participate in a fun business is a dream come true. If we do not have fun in fly fishing business, then it's not worth it to Igor or myself. Here at FTD, we don't compete with other fly tying companies or fly fishing shops, we compete against inflation and ourselves and try to beat the rising costs as best we can. We are focused on quality & unique materials at great prices...period! With the gas prices rising, just going to your favorite fly shop to browse can cost a $10 bill just to get there. Igor and I have decided to make FTD as close to a full time business as possible in 2008 and to expand FTD with new products while keeping the price structure in place. We search far and wide for raw products to make our products and to expand our line of goods. If we can not keep the price structure we don't offer these items. We don't consider ourselves the "normal" fly fishing company. We don't read fly fishing magazines, receive fly fishing catalogs, read fly fishing web sites or keep an eye on the "competition". We play in "The Dungeon" experimenting with new stuff, blending, mixing, dyeing in our bubbling cauldrons and Fronk's thunderbolt blenders that we do not have time to compete. This always keeps us fresh and innovative. We love what we do and enjoy being FTD. We hope you try FTD and our products and let us know what you think and if you have ideas, we gladly take them into consideration and many times incorporate them into FTD to make it better for you. This activity of "fly fishing" and "fly tying" is one of pure enjoyment and relaxation for Igor, Fronk and I. Many times we come back from an outing without catching a fish and many times we actually fish only a few hours out of a full day, but every time....we come home to Castle Carpathia with a smile on our faces, relaxed and with many fond memories of a wonderful day with great friends.
